Ship for islanders

PEOPLE of Tuvalu — a small Pacific Island State facing the full brunt of climate change — should soon have regular transportation and access, thanks to an initiative by the United Nations Development Programme, which has procured a 30-metre-vessel named the Tala Moana.

Yesterday, the UNDP resident representative Osnat Lubrani Tuvalu said the new vessel would be used by the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) 2 project to transport expert teams as well as essential equipment to the nine islands in Tuvalu.

A leap forward for Samoa

Proposed plans for diversifying the country’s energy supply, to include energy produced from biomass gasification, are now a step closer to becoming reality.

Biomass gasification is a process that uses organic material to make electricity.

The Government of Samoa, the Samoan Trust Estates Corporation and the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa have been investigating the potential of using Samoa’s senile coconut plantations to produce energy for a number of years.

The proposed project seeks to establish the biomass supply chain necessary to attract external investment to construct the country’s first gasification facility.

Cause and effect relations were discussed leading to the construction of a problem tree in a participatory process. Participants identified the core problem as Samoa being highly dependent on imported fossil fuels.
