Revised Energy Road Map for Nauru to contribute to a sustainable quality of life for her people
April 2018. Nauru has a revised 2018-2020 Energy Road Map to reconfirm national commitment, improve the sustainability of energy use through renewable energy and upscale energy efficiency to contribute to a sustainable quality of life for her people.
Nauru one of the world’s smallest and remotest country imports all its fuel it consumes with the annual cost volatile to its economy as global oil prices soar.
Nauru President and Minister for Commerce, Industry and Environment, Hon. Baron Divavesi Waqa said the updated road map was to achieve a reliable, affordable safe power supply, services and fossil fuels, universal excess to reliable and affordable energy services, an efficient supply and use of energy, a significant contribution from renewable energy towards electricity supply, financial sustainability of the energy sector and efficient, robust and well resourced institutions for energy planning and implementation.
“Fortunately, Nauru has the blessings of the sun and installing solar photovoltaic systems can reduce our reliance and expenditure on fossil fuels, “he said.
Almost three quarters of the world’s energy needs today are met from fossil fuels and this increases greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of climate change on the earth’s vulnerable ecosystem.
