EU, Germany help with climate change project in Papua New Guinea

The Climate Change and Development Authority in partnership with the European Union and the German government is implementing a project on adapting to climate change and sustainable energy in the Rigo district of Central province [in Papua New Guinea].
During the official launch of the project yesterday at one of the recipient communities in Kalio village, Jacob Ekinye, the general manager for adaptation and projects with CCDA, said the impacts of climate change had affected many communities in the country.
“It’s not felt in the CCDA office or at the national parliament or in Waigani. It’s affecting the livelihoods of our people living in the villages like Kalo and other rural communities,” Ekinye said.
“But to bring projects and assistance to our communities across the country is a huge challenge.
“CCDA does not have the fundings to assist our people but through partnerships with our development partners like the European Union and the government and people of Germany,   we can help our people and we thank the people and the government of Germany.”

The project coordinator for European Union- Deutsche Gesellschaft Zusammenarbeit, Gellie Akui, said the project would be implemented for two years, from February this year to the end of July 2019.
“The overall objective is to support the socioeconomic development of the three rural communities of Imuagoro, Keapara,
and Kalo in the Rigo district,” Akui said.
“The project will reduce their vulnerability against climate change impacts through the provision of reliable, integrated water supply and sustainable energy.”
The project was funded by the European Union at a cost of K4.1million.
