Integrated Food Production Project

Objectives

The Enhancing Sustainable Livelihoods through Demonstration of Environmentally Friendly Integrated Food Production Systems in Palau for Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change/El Niño Mitigation aims to have an adoption of an operating and viable integrated farming system that will enhance sustainable livelihoods and strengthen capacities to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change by demonstrating how farmers may a] raise their livestock in a way which actually enhances rather than deteriorates the environment and b] protect nursery plants from typhoons.

Outcomes

  1. Baseline Assessment conducted at the demonstration sites and identification, documentation and trialling of relevant traditional practices and adaptation methods.
  2. Integrated farming system (based on dry litter piggeries) established, evaluated, refined and modelled at 5 (five)sites.
  3. Disaster resilient nurseries established, evaluated, refined and modelled at five sites.
  4. Training modules developed on the 3 (three) main elements of the suggested integrated farming system will cover
    – animal husbandry;
    – composting and plant management;
    – farming as a business (basic business training on farm management aspects),
  5. Training modules developed on each element of project to be used in later projects and on other sites allowing replication of the project in outer islands.
  6. Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) training modules on farm management will be integrated into the project training modules on the integrated farming system.
  7. Trial of “Action Learning Groups” with early adopters/adapters will help to identify the baseline for training modules, and fine tune the elements in the revision process.
  8. Training modules on animal husbandry will be developed together with the ACSE Technical & Vocational Education & Training (TVET) component experts, allowing a smooth shift for interested farmers into the certified training system on meat inspection and animal husbandry.
  9. High quality compost produced to fertilize organic gardens at 5 (five)sites.
  10. Improve supplies of organic produce raised locally (pigs, as well as fruits/vegetables) and have access to local markets.
  11. Project Continuation Strategy implemented in which training in farm management provided to participants/participant groups results in successful handover of demo farms.
